| Raleigh: I know everyone is sad, as am I, but I will just tell you that Coach Kelly was the best boss I ever had -- a sincere, caring person, one who always helped me over the hump for the 12 years I worked at the University. I am truly sorry that I cannot come back for the funeral, but I have a feeling that there wouldn't be room in the church for me anyway. Good luck to all of you and let me know if there is anything I can do.

| Brian (Irvine, CA): To the Kelly Family,
Please accept my condolences on your loss.
As a student athlete at UC from 1988-92, nary a day went by that I didn't see or speak with Mr. Kelly. He represents what UC Athletics is all about. A great, generous man who made a point to say hello and spend time with you, always providing guidance on how to best represent oneself and the university in the best possible manner. During one men's basketball season, I even "worked" for him as golf cart driver, shuttling people back and forth from their cars when parking was scare due to the renovation of Nippert Stadium.
Mr. Kelly is a legend at UC. He will always be remembered with fondness and great respect.
Your family is my thoughts and prayers. |

| Andy Porter (Cinti): Dear Kelly Family,
As I have read many times in the couple of days, Jim's passing is a great loss for the entire Bearcat community. I met Jim as while a UC athlete many years ago. I was just one of thousands who knew Jim. My favorite Jim story was ten years later. My dad went to the Athletic Department looking for a Christmas present for me. My Dad was ushered into Jim's office and introduced himself to Jim, giving my name. Jim said, 'Wait your Andy's Father', and reached behind him and said, 'here's his third year award, he never picked it up'. More recently, my wife and I had seats near him at UC Basketball. Jim was always so friendly ; it was as though we had been friends forever. He treated everyone that way. |

Jim and I shared one of the happiest moments of my life when he un-expectantly came to my high school, pulled me out of home room and signed me to a football scholarship on national signing day in 1977. Jim truly took care of me while I was at UC. Jim made sure my roommate was a good Engineering student who was a year ahead of me in school. He made sure I had everything I needed when I was in the hospital and recovering from injuries (class registration, books, transportation around campus, emotional support). All the football players loved Jim and thought of him as a father away from home. He will truly be missed. |
