CINCINNATI, Ohio Ė The University of Cincinnati will break ground to launch the construction of the Richard E. Linder Varsity Village at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7. Key administrators to the planning and financing of the construction to UCís athletic facilities along with significant donors will turn the ceremonial first shovels of dirt on the field area adjacent to the West concourse of the Shoemaker Center.
Varsity Village is an $80.3 million integration and upgrade of the University of Cincinnatiís athletic facilities. The project is anchored by a new athletic center, the Richard E. Lindner Center, which will provide centralized administrative and coaching offices, reception and meeting space, a museum detailing the history of the university and its sports programs, a gymnasium for practice and centralized sports medicine and academic services facilities.
Other features include a new baseball stadium, tennis complex, renovation of Armory Fieldhouse and the track/soccer complex, and the construction of a boat house for the rowing team on the Licking River.
In addition, existing facilities and outdoor fields will be upgraded for wider use by UCís students.
The baseball stadium is schedule to open in April, 2004 with the remainder of the project completed during the 2005-06 academic year.
