COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati's Bearcat mascot brought home the first place trophy from the Cheerleaders of America (COA) Midwest Open National Championships last weekend. The competition was held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center Friday, Feb. 16 through Sunday, Feb. 18.
The competition, the largest Open Nationals hosted by the COA, attracts cheerleading squads, dance teams, and mascots from the surrounding region.
"This competition was an opportunity for us to generate exposure for the University of Cincinnati," said head cheerleading coach Tabby Fagan. "I am really proud of the Bearcat. Thanks to his crowd-pleasing performance, I think the University of Cincinnati has a few more fans."
The Bearcat was the crowd favorite at the competition. Following his performance, he stuck around to have his picture taken with fans and cheerleading squads in attendance.
"I'm proud to be able to contribute toward the goals set forth by Director of Athletics Mike Thomas in his CATAPULT plan," said the Bearcat. "I think I might have even gained a few new fans."
This is the Bearcat's first National Championship and only the third time he has competed in a national competition. His last appearance was at the UCA College Nationals in 2003.
