PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics once again showed the academic success of its student-athletes as 124 Bearcats were named to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team. In addition, nine members of the 2005 UC Football Team were tabbed for inclusion on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
The BIG EAST honored 2,297 student-athletes from the 16 league schools, from all of the conference-sponsored sports except football. Football players were honored with a separate team which was released earlier this year.
Student-athletes were named to the honor roll for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better while participating in a conference-sponsored sport.
The women's soccer team led the way for the Cincinnati contingent as 16 of the 27 players on last fall's roster were named all-stars. The women's cross country and track and field squads combined for 18 all-stars, while its male counterparts had 15. Other UC teams with double digit counts included rowing (14) and women's swimming and diving (12).
Other highlights from the list include:
A total of 15 student-athletes who received all-conference awards, including BIG EAST Volleyball Rookie of the Year Jessie Nevitt were included on the list.
The list included two-time BIG EAST Champion in swimming Ann Degenstein, along with multiple all-conference performer Bob Kandell from men's track and field.
Karen Berling, the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the BIG EAST, was honored as a member of the cross country and track and field teams.
The UC volleyball team saw eight of its 11 members from the 2005 season represented on the list.
