PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics placed 218 student-athletes on the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Star Team, the league announced Thursday. The 218 Bearcats are an increase from the 184 UC student-athletes named to the 2010 academic all-star team.
A total of 10 UC programs achieved double digit counts on the team, including every student-athlete on both the men's cross country (14) and women's golf teams (11).
The lacrosse team placed 26 from its roster of 35, while women's swimming and diving had 25 of its 30 student-athletes honored.
Other teams with double-digit counts are baseball (19), men's soccer (13), men's swimming and diving (16), men's track and field (16), women's soccer (18) and women's track and field (28).
The UC football team placed a league-high 19 student-athletes on the Academic All-BIG EAST Team, which was announced in December.
Earlier this week, the football and women's swimming and diving teams were honored with BIG EAST Team Excellence Awards for having the highest team GPA among competing conference schools.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 16 member institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, earned a varsity letter, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee. There are 3,236 honorees for the 2011 academic year, an increase of 66 student-athletes from the 3,170 named for the 2009-10 season.
