Week Ahead: Finals Week Equals Quiet Schedule For Athletics

Here's what's coming up this week in Cincinnati sports:

  • The men's basketball team will host Utah Valley State at 8 p.m. Saturday at Fifth Third Arena. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio and the BIG EAST Network and broadcast on radio on 700 WLW. The Bearcats are 7-0.
  • The track team will compete in the EIU Early Bird Invitational all day Friday in Charleston, Ill.

    In case you missed it:

  • The men's basketball team defeated Wright State, 77-69, last Wednesday at Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats went on to beat Toledo last Saturday, 81-47 in Toledo, Ohio. The Bearcats are off to their best start since 2004-05, when they won their first 11 games and reached the NCAA Tournament for the last time. The seven-game winning streak is their longest since 2005-06.
  • The women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season last Thursday in a 70-59 decision against Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. The Bearcats then fell to crosstown rival No. 4 Xavier last Sunday 69-61 in the Crosstown Shootout at Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats are 5-2.
  • The women's basketball team signed Talequia Hamilton (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) and Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X. Shabazz) to National Letters of Intent.
  • The football team dropped their final regular season game to Pittsburgh 28-10 last Saturday in Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats finished the 2010 season 4-8 (2-5 BIG EAST).
  • Liz Hansson enjoyed a strong showing at the 2010 AT&T Short Course Nationals on the campus of The Ohio State University. Hansson picked up an NCAA `B' qualifying time in the 200 backstroke with her 1:59.10 clocking. She placed 25th in the event. It is the third-fastest time in UC history, and Hansson's second-best career time. She also added a personal best time of 2:03.99 in the 200 IM, the third-fastest time in Bearcats history. Hansson also placed 34th overall in the 100 backstroke, with her effort of 56.20. Former Bearcats Josh Schneider and Jeremy Peter also took part in the event.
  • Brittany Teneyck won two events and Stephen Cunningham captured one leading the swimming and diving teams at the Miami Invitational. Teneyck took top honors in the one and three-meter diving events, combining with Kirtley Krombholz for a 1-2 sweep in the three-meter. On the men's side, Cunningham took top honors in the 500 freestyle, leading the men to a sixth place finish in the team standings. The UC women took fourth place.
  • The No. 21 volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Volleyball Championship after defeating Western Kentucky in three sets last Friday at Huff Hall in Champaign, Ill. The Bearcats went on to play Illinois last Saturday where they fell 3-1, ending tournament and season play for Cincinnati. UC finished the season 30-6 (13-1 BIG EAST).
