Director of Athletics Mike Thomas

August 1, 2008

Bearcat Fans,

With summer coming to a close, our student-athletes will be coming back to campus this week for what promises to be a great 2008-09 sports year here at Cincinnati. As the Director of Athletics, and a fan, I am excited about the coming year of competition and look forward to a thrill-packed 10 months of UC athletics success.

One of the best things about being the Director of Athletics at UC is getting to know our student-athletes, both past and present. Two of the young people that I have had the privilege to meet over the past three years are also two of our country's best hopes for Olympic Gold - Mary Wineberg and David Payne. Here in the next few weeks I know that we will all be tuned into the coverage of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad which will be held in Beijing, China from August 8 to August 24. Be sure to follow these UC alumni at our special BEARCATS IN BEIJING web site, located at GoBEARCATS.com.

Back closer to the Queen City, UC volleyball, women's soccer, men's soccer, and cross country will also be headed back to campus in the coming weeks as we point toward the start of classes in mid-September. Head coach Brian Kelly and the UC football team report to preseason camp this weekend and head to Camp Higher Ground in West Harrison, Ind., next week. We truly appreciate the staff at Camp Higher Ground for the opportunities they provide both our football team and the UC Marching Band and the first-class manner in which they host us.

As always, we appreciate your support of UCATS and the great work our many volunteers do on a daily basis. The main reason we are all associated with UC athletics is to serve the best interests of the student-athletes, and through fundraising we are able to provide the much needed scholarship support to our young people. I have had the chance to meet many new UCATS members over the summer months and I can report that the enthusiasm around the Bearcats is growing every day. I thank each of you for your support and generosity in helping us reach record numbers of donors and dollars raised over the last year. If you know of someone who is a UC fan, but is not a member of UCATS, be sure and share your positive experience with them and encourage them to join. For more information, please check out the UCATS site on the web at www.UCATS.net.

I look forward to seeing all of you over the course of the coming sports seasons - remember to ... Come Early, Be Loud, and Wear Black!

Sincerely,
Mike Thomas
Director of Athletics
