I'm about to pay the Louisville Cardinals the highest compliment a diehard sports fan can give a team other than the one he or she roots for.
I hate them.
That's right, I absolutely loathe the Louisville Cardinals.
It's a compliment because you can only truly despise teams or players that frequently break your heart.
In other words, it's hard to abhor Eastern Kentucky.
As a Bengals fan, I detest the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As a Reds fan, I'd like to strangle Jim "Freakin" Edmonds who must have a career average of .874 against Cincinnati.
As a Jack Nicklaus fan, I scream at the TV whenever Tiger Woods is on the verge of winning a major because I don't want him to break the Golden Bear's records.
And as a UC fan, my 2nd-favorite team is whoever is playing Louisville that week.
It's a common condition. Now that I'm living in Boston, I'm surrounded by New Englanders who seem to hate the Yankees more than they love the Red Sox. In fact, at the victory parade following the Patriots first Super Bowl championship, the loudest cheers came when linebacker Larry Izzo led the crowd in a chant of "Yankees Suck."
Let's face it. What Louisville has accomplished in the last 10 years is nothing short of incredible. The Pitino and Petrino show has made the U of L a national powerhouse in football and basketball--arguably the strongest program for the two sports combined of any school in the country.
In short, the Cardinals have my utmost respect.
Doesn't mean I have to like 'em.
