CINCINNATI – Nearly 60 percent of University of Cincinnati student-athletes had a 3.0 or better semester grade point average (GPA) and 18 had a perfect 4.0, according to Fall 2012 semester academic data highlighted by the UC athletic department. The department also announced team academic data and individual academic leaders.
Having transitioned from an academic calendar of quarters to semesters, the Bearcats had a departmental GPA of 3.028, marking its eighth consecutive grading period with a 3.0 GPA or higher and 14 of the last 15 quarters in which the department had a 3.0 GPA or higher. Men’s basketball posted its highest team GPA since the Spring 2007 quarter. Led by women’s golf with the highest team GPA of 3.495 and baseball leading all men’s teams with a 3.336 GPA, 11 of 17 teams achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Senior Associate Director of Athletics Dr. Joe Luckey leads the Office of Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS), which is responsible for providing academic support to UC’s student-athletes. Luckey was excited to see the final results of the fall semester as 265 student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher, placing them on the Bearcat Honor Roll.
“Having 57% achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher exemplifies that we have high-caliber student-athletes at UC,” said Luckey.
The academic prowess of UC’s student-athletes is also reflected in 18 persons achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA and 153 (33%) achieving a 3.4 GPA or higher. Student-athletes with a 4.0 will receive the TopCat Award while those with a 3.4 or higher earn recognition as Dean’s List honorees.
“Our coaches deserve recognition for recruiting the student-athletes and our student-athletes deserve recognition for their hard work in the classroom,” Luckey said. “Finally, our SASS staff has worked diligently to support these student-athletes as they balance their athletic, academic and personal demands.”
During halftime of the February 12 men’s basketball game against Villanova University, student-athletes on the Bearcat Honor Roll and TopCat lists as well as the top male (baseball) and female (women’s golf) teams and student-athletes with the highest GPA on their teams will be honored for their academic achievements.
