Media Day Highlights

Aug. 12, 2008

OK, I wouldn’t exactly call them highlights, but we got BK for his first official news conference of the year, and after a lunch of burger and fries (and salad), we talked to a few players. I was kind of in a silly/stupid mood, so I decided to ask some of the players a silly/stupid question.

First, the hard news:

  • Part of BK’s opening statement: “This year is a very important year for the University of Cincinnati. We must win and we must win now. We don’t have time to talk about where we want to be in three to five years. We have to live in the present. Our preparation at Higher Ground has been about winning now and the importance of winning right now.”
  • Reserve offensive lineman C.J. Cobb was walking around with a big brace on his knee, and it doesn’t look good. BK said he didn’t know the diagnosis yet or how long he’ll be away from the field, but the way he answered the Cobb question might give you an indication of what he’s thinking.

Said BK: “C.J. is a guy who is in that first six or seven for us. We’re going to have to develop some younger guys. Now, Randy Martinez has to step up for us, and Frank Becker has to be more consistent for us. That center position for us is one where we have to develop those young guys to make up for C.J.

Based on that, does Cobb sound like a guy who will be back on the field in a few days?

  • It’s been bandied around the Interweb the last couple days, but freshman receiver D.J. Woods has been held out of full-contact practice. Medically, he’s not cleared to play yet.

“They want to make sure in contact situations he doesn’t develop a blood clot or something to that effect,” BK said.

BK, though, also said he expects Woods to be cleared medically and is looking to give him and freshman Nick Truesdell playing time this year.

  •

  • Apparently, Ben Mauk has been seen around these parts the last day or two, and I guess he’s been in contact with some NFL teams about coming into camp. It sounds like if that doesn’t work out, Mauk will come on board as a grad assistant and try for the NFL next year.
  • OK, onto the silly/stupid stuff. I asked five players to tell me their favorite UC football player and why. Some gave me funny answers, some gave me straight-up answers, Dustin Grutza gave me a political answer (he’s learning from Mauk, I think), and Kevin Huber gave me the least-imaginative answer of all. But that’s OK. Here are the answers:

    Senior cornerback Mike Mickens

“I like Terrill Byrd. He creates a lot of problems back there, and he comes to play every game. You know what you’re going to get from him.”

    Senior cornerback DeAngelo Smith

“Brandon Underwood. He’s funny. Look at him now. He’s lost. What’s up, B? He’s funny.”

During the time I was talking to Smith, Underwood was at a nearby table, staring off into space.

    Senior tight end Connor Barwin

“Ricardo Matthews is my favorite player (laughs). He’s the most interesting, funny guy. Every day, he’ll do something funny that comes out of nowhere. I enjoy being on the D-line with him.”

    Senior quarterback Dustin Grutza

“That’s tough to say. In our quarterback group, Tony Pike, because he’s hilarious. He keeps you in a lighter mood during practice. He’ll keep you in that good spirit. On defense, it’s Lamonte Nelms. He’s intense. We came in together, we roomed together for three years. He works hard and has done a lot. We push each other to get better each year.”

    Senior punter Kevin Huber

“I have to say (long-snapper) Mike Windt.”

    I call that a copout

“I know, but he’s my boy. We stick together all the time. In the offseason, we’re always together working out. We have to be together the whole time. He’s got to be my favorite player on the team.”
