EAST MEADOW, N.Y.  -- The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished fifth and seventh, respectively, at the 2006 BIG EAST Championships, which wrapped up Saturday night at the Nassau County Aquatics Center.  Senior Ann Degenstein (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) won the 200 butterfly title, breaking a school school record and improving her ranking to sixth nationally in the event.

One day after winning the 100 butterfly and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships, Degenstein broke her own school record in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 1:58.28.  She now holds both the 100 and 200 butterfly records and will represent the Bearcats at the NCAA Championships in both events.

Other scorers for the women include Gerdien de Jong (Bussum, Netherlands/Goois Lyceum), Randi Vogel (Maineville, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame), and the 400 freestyle relay team.  de Jong placed ninth in the 100 freestyle, finishing in a season-best 51.41.  Vogel was a sixth-place finisher in the 200 backstroke, coming in at 2:02.69.  The relay squad posted a season-best 3:25.58, placing fifth.

Three Bearcats finished in the top six in the men's 100 freestyle.  Marcel Kleiner (Heilbronn, Germany/Hohen Staufen Gymnasium) was the top finisher, placing second in a season-best 44.68.  David Gustavsson (Aby, Sweden/Ebersteinska) and Ryan Yearwood (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Queen's Royal College) finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth, posting a 45.05 and 45.10, respectively.  Bjorn Mates (Eislingen, Germany/Wirtemberg Gymnasium) was the second-place finisher in the 200 backstroke in a season-best 1:47.76.  The men's 400 freestyle team finished third and met the NCAA `B' qualifying standard with a 2:58.97.

The Cincinnati men were fifth with 325 points.  The women finished seventh after scoring 265 team points.  Notre Dame swept the men's and women's titles for the second consecutive season.  The Pittsburgh men finished second, while the Panther women took third.
