Bearcats Compete on Day One at American Swimming & Diving Championships|

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -With a light first day of action that included diving and a pair of relays, the University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams opened competition at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.
The women placed third in the 800 freestyle relay, with Weronika Wasiakowska, Hope Andrews, Jessica Piper and Jackie Keire posting a time of 7:17.97. Later, a group of Piper, Helena Pikhartova, Iuliia Fedoreeva and Wasiakowska placed fourth in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:43.26.
On the men's side, the 800 free team of Tommy Easley, Hunter Pasek, Dean Waite and Joe Scherpenberg placed fourth in 6:40.08. The 200 medley relay squad Awse Ma'aya, Dan Gilbertson, Rob Walsh and Mike Kaplan also finished fourth (1:31.77).
The meet continues on Thursday, Feb. 20, with preliminaries in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. Women's one-meter diving preliminaries will take place at 12:30 p.m. and the finals for all the earlier events, along with the 4x50 freestyle relay. Keire enters the championships with the fastest time of any conference swimmer in the 500 freestyle.
