Keire Wins 500 Freestyle to Highlight Day Two at American Championships|

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jackie Keire entered the 2014 American Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships with the league's fastest time in the 500 freestyle. On day two of the league meet, she delivered, earning Cincinnati's first individual league title in swimming since 2012.
Keire swam the quickest time in the morning preliminary round (4:47.29) before swimming the finals in 4:43.02 to win ahead of SMU's Nina Rangelova (4:47.49). Keire not only took home the individual title, but set a pool record at Louisville's Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Keire wasn't the only Bearcats swimmer to reach an evening finals race. Sammie Wheeler reached the finals of the 200 individual medley with a preliminary time of 2:02.60. She placed seventh in the championship heat, touching in 2:03.76.
Helena Pikhartova replicated Wheeler's seventh place finish in the 50 freestyle. Pikhartova used a prelim swim of 23.10 to reach the evening finals, where a time of 23.04 placed her seventh.
The trio of Keire, Wheeler and Pikhartova was joined by Weronika Wasiakowska to earn a silver medal for the Bearcats in the 200 freestyle relay. Keire led off, followed by Pikhartova and Wasiakowska, with Wheeler swimming the anchor. UC finished in 1:32.01 to pick-up the second-place points, just one-hundredth of a second off the school record.
The female divers competed on the one-meter board, with Chloe Merriss finishing as the top Bearcat with a score of 186.20.
The women stand in fifth place after two days of competition with 152 points. Louisville leads the meet with 376 points.
On the men's side, Joe Bott swam his way into the evening final of the 500 freestyle. His morning swim of 4:32.95 earned him a spot in the finals, where his 4:32.68 time earned him a seventh place finish.
Hunter Pasek reached the finals in the 200 individual medley by virtue of a 1:51.36 preliminary time. He placed eighth overall with a finals swim of 1:51.12.
Rob Walsh, Pasek, Joe Scherpenberg and Dean Waite swam the 200 freestyle relay (in that order) to a fourth place finish with a time of 1:22.68 to cap the day's action. The men are in fourth place with a score of 155.
Day three begins on Friday, Feb. 21, with 10:00 a.m. preliminaries for the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. men's three-meter diving preliminaries will begin at 12:30 p.m., with finals action again beginning at 6:00 p.m.
