UC Men sit in 6th; Women in 7th after Second Day of BIG EAST Meet

INDIANAPOLIS — After the second round of the BIG EAST Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at IUPUI Natatorium, the University of Cincinnati sit in sixth place in the men’s division and seventh in the women’s through 15 events.

The UC men have an 86-point team total, while first-place Notre Dame has 367. The Cincinnati women own a 117.5- point total, which is behind top-ranked Louisville’s 332 points.

Cincinnati’s top finish of the day occurred during the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay when sophomore Helena Pikhartova, junior Weronika Wasiakowska and seniors Alicia Berman and Bailey Laban clocked in at 1 minute, 33.44 seconds, which is the sixth best time in school history.

Pikhartova’s mark of 23.27 in the 50-yard freestyle finals was good for a fifth-place finish. Her time of 23.10 in the preliminary round is seventh best in Bearcats history.

Freshman Jessica Piper placed seventh in the women’s 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:03.65, which was 0.02 ticks behind her personal best and good for sixth best in UC allure.

In the men’s division, the UC men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Joe Scherpenberg, senior Roberto Nevarez and sophomore Mike Kaplan and Brock Slavens recorded a time of 1:22.48, which was good for fifth place points.

The BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships resume Friday beginning at 10 a.m. The preliminary and consolation rounds for the men’s 3-meter dive as well as the prelims for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay will take place in the morning session with the finals set for 6 p.m.
