UC Wraps Up Action at BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -- Helena Pikhartova finished off a successful BIG EAST Conference swimming and diving championships meet Saturday night by placing fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in a personal-best 2:12.55 and helping the Bearcats women's team finish sixth in the final team standings with 289.5 total points. The meet took place at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The 200-yard breaststroke was the third championship final for Pikhartova in the meet and she totaled 42 points individually. She was also fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and swam in four- relays that placed in the top five.

Victoria Jacumski and Samantha Wheeler preceded Pikhartolva in the consolation final of the 200-yard breaststroke, placing fourth (2:18.79) and eighth (2:25.12), respectively.

UC's Jessica Piper made three championship finals as well, including Saturday's 200-yard backstroke in which she finished seventh. Piper was also eighth in the 200 free and seventh in the 200 individual medley, totaling 35 points and swimming in two relays. Two of Piper's teammates were in the 200-yard backstroke consolation final. Erin Frye finished fourth in 2:00.30 and Amanda Hardewig was sixth in 2:02.33.

Joseph Scherpenberg totaled 36 points for the men's team, including a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke championship final in 1:47.25, placing him No. 3 on UC's all-time top 10 list in the event. The Bearcats had four swimmers in the 200-yard backstroke finals - Scherpenberg and Awse Ma'aya (eighth place in 1:49.87) in the championship final and Alexander Chin (fifth in 1:48.99) and Donovan Kearns (sixth in 1:49.18) in the consolation final.

The UC men's team finished fifth with 259 points. The University of Louisville won the women's team title with 895 points and the University of Notre Dame won the men's team title with 991 points.

In other UC results on Saturday, Francis Bott placed eighth in the marathon of the meet, finishing in 15:35.47 in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle. Kathryn Nemann was 11th in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:00.47.

Weronica Wasiakowska was seventh in the women's 100-yard freestyle championship final in 50.44.

Michael Craig was seventh in the consolation final of the men's 200-yard breaststroke in 2:04.93.

The Bearcats placed a pair in the women's 200-yard butterfly consolation final with Iuliia Fedoreeva placing fifth in 2:02.82 and Brittany Groene eighth in 2:05.16. There were also two in the men's consolation final - Hunter Pasek finished third in 1:50.61 and Nathan Anderson was seventh in 1:53.82.

The meet ended with the 400-yard freestyle relays and UC took fifth in both the men's and women's races. The women's team of Fedoreeva, Pikhartova, Wasiakowska and Laban finished in 3:23.85 while the men's foursome of Scherpenberg, Roberto Nevarez, Brock Slavens, Tommy Easley had a time of 3:01.91.
