PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Freshman Helena Pikhartova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Jana Nerudy) set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke as the University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the Pittsburgh Invitational Sunday at Trees Pool.
Pikhartova won the women’s 200-yard breaststroke after setting a UC record mark of 2 minutes, 14.76 seconds. The previous record was 2:15.68, previously set by senior Josefin Wede (Landskrona, Sweden/Gripenskolan/Auburn) on Dec. 4, 2010 at the Miami (OH) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. Pikhartova’s mark qualifies for the NCAA ‘B’ cut.
Also in the women’s 200 breast, senior Stephanie Conklin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) placed eighth with a time of 2:26.50, while sophomore Victoria Jacumski (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) placed 10th after finishing in 2:19.01.
In the men’s 200 breast, senior Haywood Miller (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Maryland ) continued his strong Pitt Invite showing by placing seventh with a mark of 2:06.89.
Addition events on Sunday included the 1,650 freestyle, 200 back, 100 free, 200 butterfly and 400 free relay.
Sophomore Weronika Wasiakowska (Przykop, Poland/School of Sports Championship) placed seventh in the finals of the 100-yard freestyle after she finished in 52.43 seconds. In the men’s heat, UC frosh Awse Ma’aya (Amman, Jordan/The Bolles School) placed 16th overall to lead the Bearcats with a mark of 49.72.
In the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay, the UC team of junior Alicia Berman (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), Wasiakowska, junior Bailey Laban (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) and sophomore Sammie Wheeler (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) placed seventh with a mark of 3:30.06.
The UC men’s 400 free relay ‘A’ team of Miller, sophomore Rob Walsh (Fort Wright, Ky./Covington Catholic), senior Matt Hays (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) and junior Chris Hale (Hillsborough, N.C./Durham School of the Arts/Maryland) recorded a time of 3:16.51, which was good for 10th place.
In the women’s 1,650 free, sophomore Katie Nemann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) placed 11th with a mark of 17:39.56. Freshman Justin Riding (Medina, Ohio/Medina) also placed 11th in the 1,650 free for the UC men with a mark of 18:16.26.
Ma’aya placed 10th overall in the men’s 200 back division after finishing in 1:54.75. In the women’s 200-yard backstroke, junior Erin Frye (Huntington, W.Va./Paul G. Blazer) won the bonus heat with a mark of 2:03.23, which placed her 17th overall.
Overall, the UC men placed fourth out of five teams with 398 team points, which was 750 points behind first-place Pittsburgh. The Bearcats women placed fifth out of six teams after accumulating 314.5 points, which was 998.5 points behind first-place Ohio State.
Cincinnati next competes Dec. 1-3 at the Miami (OH) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio and the Winter Longcourse Nationals in Atlanta, Ga.
