INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Cincinnati men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to the Hoosier State Tuesday to compete in the BIG EAST Conference Swimming Championships Wednesday through Saturday at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Natatorium.
The 2013 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships begin noon Wednesday with the women’s and men’s 1-meter diving and conclude with 14 final events on Saturday starting at 6 p.m.
Several Bearcats have recorded top-10 marks throughout the 2012-13 season and are poised to challenge for conference titles.
In the women’s division, freshman Jessica Piper (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) owns the fourth fastest time in the conference in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:57.89, which is 3.84 ticks behind Notre Dame’s Kelly Ryan’s top mark. Sitting in seventh in the 200 back is senior Erin Frye (Huntington, W.Va./Paul G. Blazer), who produced a time of 1:59.67 on Nov.29, 2012.
Piper also sits at No. 10 in the league in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.63, also set Nov. 29.
Sophomore Helena Pikhartova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Jana Nerudy) owns top-10 marks in the 100-yard breaststroke (fifth overall – 1:02.25) and 50-yard freestyle (eighth overall – 23.51 seconds).
Senior Ashley Yanza (Ft. Belvior, Va./Lakota East/Wisconsin-Milwaukee) claims a time of 2:00.47 in the 200-yard butterfly, which sits in seventh-place overall in the conference.
Junior Weronika Wasiakowska (Przykop, Poland/School of Sports Championship) has a ninth-place overall mark of 51.03 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Victoria Jacumski’s (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) time of 2:19.02 currently ranks 10th in the league.
UC owns high seeds in the relay events, led by the women’s 400 medley team of Piper, Pikhartova, freshman Iullia Fedoreeva (Barnaul, Russia/Barnaul) and Wasiakowska, who own the second fastest time in the BIG EAST after producing a school record time of 3:43.84 on Nov. 29, 2012.
Additionally, the Cincinnati women own fourth seeds in the 200 freestyle and the 200 medley, as well as fifth seeds in the 400 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relays.
In the men’s division, UC freshman Joe Bott’s (Clive, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) mark of 15:42.12 in the 1,650-yard freestyle sits at No. 6 in the league rankings.
Sophomore Awse Ma’aya (Amman, Jordan/The Bolles School) ranks ninth in the 200-yard backstroke standings with a timed mark of 1:49.38.
Relay-wise, the Bearcats men own a No. 4 seed in the 800 freestyle after freshman Andrew Albert (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland), senior Matt Hargrove (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster), freshman Donovan Kearns (Georgetown, Ky./Scott County) and sophomore Alex Chin (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) recorded a mark of 6:56.18 on Nov. 29, 2012.
The UC men also own fifth seeds in the 200 and 400 freestyles, as well as the 200 and 400 medley relays.
UC will have its toughest competition from the Notre Dame men and Louisville women, who both head into the conference meet as defending champions.
