Piper, Pikhartova and Scherpenberg Advance to BIG EAST Finals

INDIANAPOLIS - UC's Jessica Piper, Helena Pikhartova and Joseph Scherpenberg advanced to the Friday night championship finals after the morning's preliminary races at the BIG EAST Conference swimming and diving championship. The event is being held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Pikhartova had the best finish of the session for the Bearcats, placing fifth in the women's 100-yard breaststroke prelims in 1:02.03. Scherpenberg was sixth in the men's 100-yard backstroke prelims (49.65) and Piper was seventh in the women's 200-yard freestyle prelims (1:50.06). Scherpenberg also qualified for the consolation final in the men's 200-yard freestyle after swimming 1:38.15 in the prelims.

Three Bearcats earned spots in two consolation finals - Iuliia Fedoreeva (women's 100-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual medley), Awse Ma'aya (men's 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke) and Bailey Laban (women's 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard freestyle).

There were eight other Bearcats who will also swim in the consolation finals: Hunter Pasek (men's 100-yard butterfly), Roberto Nevarez (men's 100-yard butterfly), Weronica Wasiakowska (women's 200-yard freestyle), Samantha Wheeler (100-yard breaststroke), Michael Craig (100-yard breaststroke), Erin Frye (women's 100-yard backstroke), Alexander Chin (men's 100-yard backstroke) and Donovan Kearns (men's 100-yard backstroke).


 

 

Three UC swimmers lowered their personal best marks in Thursday events. Scherpenberg trimmed .29 seconds off his 200-yard freestyle to move him to sixth on the UC all-time top 10 list. He also lowered his 100-yard backstroke time by .62 to remain third on that list. Piper jumped two spots on the 200-yard freestyle list, going from ninth all-time to seventh after trimming .53 off her previous best. Fedoreeva lowered her 100-yard butterfly time to 55.53 to move to No. 5 on that list.

Friday's championship finals will begin at 6 p.m. ET and will also include the men's and women's 400-yard medley relays. Live results and videostream are available on the BIG EAST web site (BIGEAST.org). The championship meet runs through Saturday with another full day of prelims and finals.
