Former University of Cincinnati swimmer Josh Schneider faces off against Cullen Jones in a 50-meter freestyle swim off on Thursday, May 12 at 6:20 p.m. during the Charlotte UltraSwim to determine a spot on the 2011 U.S. World Championship Team. The 27th Annual Charlotte UltraSwim will take place May 12-15 at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte.
Schneider, the current American record holder in the 50-meter short course event (20.88), and Jones have been on a collision course since the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships in August when the two tied for second in the 50-meter freestyle. They swam identical times of 21.97, setting up the match race for the final spot on the U.S. roster for the 2011 FINA World Championships. Jones and Schneider are teammates and training partners at SwimMAC Carolina.
Both will also compete at the Grand Prix meet, squaring off in the 50-meter freestyle. Jones, the current American long course record holder in the 50-meter freestyle (21.40), is the top seed for the Grand Prix event in Charlotte with a season-best time of 21.97. Schneider is seeded third with a top time of 22.24.
Schneider is also slotted to compete in the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle.
Schneider, the 2010 NCAA Champion in the 50-yard freestyle, is training for the 2012 Olympics in London. He closed out his career at UC as a five-time all-America selection, seven-time BIG EAST Conference Champion, two-time BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year, and the holder of five school records (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 50 fly, and 100 fly).
In his time at UC, Schneider set 22 school-record times and was undefeated in the 50 freestyle during the 2009-10 season.
