Kleiner Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team

May 24, 2007

CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati senior swimmer Marcel Kleiner continues to gather postseason awards, as he was named to the Collegiate Sports Information Director's Association (CoSIDA) Academic All-District IV First Team on Thursday (May 24). The senior was awarded a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship by the NCAA earlier this month and named a BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar Athlete in April, earning another $2,000 scholarship for graduate work.

The award marks the second consecutive CoSIDA honor for Kleiner. He was named to the All-District second team in 2006.

Kleiner was named UC's Scholar-Athlete of the Fall quarter after posting a 4.0 GPA. Holding a 3.93 GPA, he has been accepted into UC's MBA program for next fall. A native of Heilbronn, Germany, Kleiner led the Bearcats to a fifth-place finish at the 2007 BIG EAST Championships with three top-four finishes. Kleiner won the 2005 Conference USA Invitational title in the 100-meter freestyle and was part of four championship and school record-setting relays that same season.

"The impressive array of accolades Marcel has earned so far is a testament to his achievements as a "student-athlete" in the truest sense of the phrase," head coach Monty Hopkins said. "He has earned this recognition on the strength of his intellectual capacity, success-oriented attitude and dedicated work-ethic. Add to these awards the fact that Marcel was an influential and effective team leader, a record-breaking and champion swimmer and one begins to get a glimpse of what a very impressive young man he is.

"In recent years we have been fortunate to have a number of outstanding Bearcat record-breaking swimmers and divers who also happen to be excellent students," Hopkins continued. "Marcel continues that tradition established by the likes of Olympian and NCAA Champion Becky Ruehl, Olympian Honza Vitazka, and NCAA All-Americans Maria Oberg, Ann Degenstein and Ryan McNally (to name only a few) as elite athletes, excellent students and great leaders."

District IV consists of all NCAA Division I universities in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. The CoSIDA Academic All-America teams will be announced on June 12 (men) and June 14 (women).
