Track & Field Takes Top Spot At Akron Opener

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati women's indoor track and field team returned to action by winning the Akron Opener on Friday at the Stile Field House. The Bearcats tallied 112 points to take the overall title and earn dual meet wins over host Akron (109), Eastern Michigan (67), Robert Morris (48) and Youngstown State (39).

UC got two event wins from Jasmine Cotten and single wins from Shanay Portis and Kathy Klump.

Portis won the 60 meters in dominant fashion, clocking 7.66 ahead of the second-place time of 7.81. Morgan Gordon was third in 7.81, Paris Campbell placed fourth in 7.93 and Cameron Gardnertook sixth in 8.08.

Cotten led a 1-2-3-4 sweep for Cincinnati in the 60 hurdles. Cotten took the top spot with a time of 8.70. Paris Campbell was second (8.72), Je'Rica Sanders placed third (8.74) and Danheisha Hardingwas fourth (9.02).

Dominique Best took ninth in 9.43 and Kaitlyn Goodwas 12th with a time of 9.65.

Portis clocked 25:07 to take second in the 200 meters. Alyssa Edley was fifth (25.93) and Morgan Gordontook seventh (26.26).

Jalisa Jarrettran a time of 58.70 in the 400 meters to place third overall. Harding was eighth in 1:02.40 and Sanders was 10th in 1:04.00.

Klump crossed the line in 2:10.75 to win the 800 meters. She was just ahead of Jenna Heaton who placed third in 2:14.86. Katie Honigfordwas seventh with a time of 2:21.86.

Ashley Earmanwas sixth in the mile with a time of 5:37.03.

Bridget Connolly was the top UC finisher in the 3,000, clocking 10:28.03. Cortney Staruch was sixth in 10:34.02 and Lauren Goodwintook eighth with a time of 10:36.05.

The 'A' quartet of Portis, Heaton, Jarrett and Klump clocked 3:50.01 to take second place in 4x400 relay. Edley, Cotten, Good and Gordon made up the 'B' group that took third place in 4:03.52.

The 'C' group of Harding, Sanders, Best and Honigford took seventh in 4:10.71.

In the field events, Cotten won the high jump with a leap of 1.80 meters (5-10.75). Kaitlyn Goodwas 8th with a best effort of 1.60 meters (5-03.00).

Alyssa Edleywas fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.24 meters (17-02.25).

Gardner placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.26 meters (36-11.50). Alexandri Paskell was ninth with a best jump of 9.60 meters (31-06.00).

Frida Akerstrom had a best toss of 16.17 meters (53-00.75) to place fourth in the women's weight throw. Jessica Molyetwas seventh with a throw of 15.52 meters (50-11.00).

Mekayla Breland won flight one of the women's weight throw, placing 10th overall, with a toss of 13.55 meters (44-05.50). Bridget McNeillwas 12th (12.80/42-00.00).

Akerstrom took second in the shot put with a heave of 14.10 meters (46-03.25). Moylet was fourth after a throw of 12.52 meters (40-09.00) and Breland placed seventh (12.00/39-04.50).

The Bearcats are back in action at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. on Jan. 20-21.
