The Armory Collegiate Invitational is considered one of the top indoor track & field meets in the nation and on Friday the University of Cincinnati women’s team showed it can compete with the very best. The Bearcats came away with eight top-10 finishes on the first day of the two-day meet.

Erika Hurd set a new collegiate career best mark in the high jump, clearing 5’10” to win against a field that included five other nationally ranked high jumpers. Teammate Kaitlyn Good finished 10th at 5’ 5”. Good also finished fifth in the 500 meters (1:15.64) and Javette Lee seventh (1:16.42).

Kenya Woodall also had a collegiate career best, running 55.82 in the 400 meters preliminaries in the afternoon. She came back in the evening finals to run 56.57 and finished fourth.

Pole vaulter Mackenzie Fields equaled her season-best mark of 13’ 9.25” and finished second in a field that had nine other nationally ranked performers. Chelsea Vaughan placed eighth in a separate section of the pole vault (12’ 1.75”).

Shanay Portis was ninth in the long jump (18’ 6”).

Anne Pace also posted a collegiate career best, clocking 10:35.10 and finishing 22nd in a section of the 3,000 meters. Frida Akerstrom just missed a top 10 finish, placing 11th in the shot put (49’ 5.75”).

Hurd’s win in the high jump was her third of the season. She won at the SPIRE Institute Collegiate Opener in December at 5’ 8”, then went 5’ 9.25” at Indiana University’s Gladstein Invitational for her second win. Her 5’ 10” mark on Friday tied the event record in the high jump college section at the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

The meet, which is being held at the Armory Track in New York City, continues on Saturday. To receive event-by-event results on Twitter, follow @UCDougMosley.
