Pole vaulter Mackenzie Fields continued her assault on the UC record book on Friday when she posted the sixth-best mark in UC women’s outdoor track & field history, winning the event at 13’ 3.5” at the UCF Invitational in Orlando.

Meanwhile, Kevin Fink etched his name in the record book as well, becoming the seventh-fastest individual in the 5,000 meters in UC men’s outdoor track & field history, finishing second in 14:37.96 at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa.

Both meets continue with the second of two days of competition on Saturday.

In a limited schedule on the first day of the UCF Invitational, the Bearcats notched two other top 10 performances. Shanay Portis finished seventh in the long jump with a 18’ 10” leap and Frida Akerstrom was 10th in the hammer throw at 159’ 10”. UC took three of the top six spots in the pole vault with Alyssa McBride finishing second at 12’ 5.5” and Chelsea Vaughan sixth at 11’ 5.75”. Fields won for the second time in two weeks after posting the same height to win at last weekend’s Early Birds Relays. Fields now three of the six best marks in the pole vault in UC history.

The men’s team had a busier schedule at the Alabama Relays and turned in a solid day of top 10 results. Josh Dangel went 16’ 6.75” in the pole vault to finish fourth. In the triple jump, Michael Nwankwo was fifth (47’ 2.25”) and Tariq Sanders ninth (46’ 8.25”). UC’s 4x200-meters relay team of Darius Howard, Darnell Gilbert, Kevin Girgis and Brendan Lyshe finished seventh in 1:30.84. Terrence Somerville was eighth in the 100 meters in 11.15.

Fink’s career-best time in the 5,000 meters pacedf a trio of UC runners who were in the top 10. Oliver Book was fourth in 14:47.41 and Jeffrey Griffiths seventh in 14:58.90.

The UCF Invitational will begin competition Saturday morning and run through the afternoon. The Alabama Relays will begin Saturday afternoon and go through the evening. For event-by-event results via Twitter, follow @UCDougMosley.
