CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track and field program found a good amount of success at its first of two home meets over the weekend as both squads captured team titles at the 2017 Oliver Nikoloff Open that wrapped up Saturday at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati. The Bearcats combined to win 15 event titles on second day of competition to raise their weekend total to 17 crowns while adding sweeps of the high jump, pole vault and shot put to the hammer sweep from Friday afternoon.

// TEAM STANDINGS
The Bearcats swept the team titles as both sides won by large margins. On the women’s side, the Bearcats scored 243.5 points to easily outdistance the field as Dayton was second at 100.5. Eastern Kentucky (80), Toledo (69) and Northern Kentucky (68) rounded out the Top 5 teams in the women’s standings. In the men’s title race, UC won with 186 points while Marian (Ind.) was second with 107, just edging Eastern Kentucky, who was third with 103. Xavier was fourth (70) and Butler fifth (67) to round out the Top 5.

// MORE THAN ONE WIN
One woman and three men had their hands in multiple victories on the day with Haisha Bisiolu leading the way as she won two individual titles before helping the 4x100m relay to a meet record and victory. Bisiolu took gold in the 100m dash in 11.99 before claiming the 200m dash in 24.02. Between those two races, she ran on the 4x100m relay that raced to an easy win in 45.35, breaking the meet record of 45.70 that was run in 2012, while also posting the eighth-best time in UC history. Bisiolu was joined on the relay by Kellsa Mbah, Bryana Robinson and Tiona Lattimore.

For the men, the quarter mile and throwing rings are where the multiple wins originated. On the track, the team of Nathan Smith, Halen Witcher, Kevin Konkoly and Jaashir Morris combined to run 3:18.69 to capture the 4x400m relay with the latter two men winning individually earlier. First, Konkoly took the top spot in the 400m dash as he covered the single lap in 50.08. Then, Morris clocked a time of 55.58 to win the 400m hurdles. In the field, Macklin Tudor was victorious in both throws he entered, taking the discus with a toss of 58.73m (192-08) before claiming the win in the shot put with a best of 17.65m (57-11.00).

// MORE VICTORIES BY THE WOMEN
Aliya Barnes won the 100m hurdles in a season-best time of 13.95 to round out the track victories. In the field, UC was victorious four more times. Loretta Blaut had the best clearance in the high jump with a mark of 1.72m (5-07.75) while Brooke Catherine completed the vertical sweep for the women as she cleared 3.65m (11-11.75) to win the pole vault. Irati Mitxelena took gold in the triple jump as her mark of 12.08m (39-07.75) not only won the event, but also gave her the third-best mark in program history. The final victory came in the shot put with Ashley Williams winning with a mark of 14.84m (48-08.25), the fifth-best toss in program history.

// MORE VICTORIES BY THE MEN
The men claimed two more victories, both coming in the vertical field events. First, Jordan Hardiman cleared a season-best mark of 2.03m (6-08.00) to take the top spot in the high jump before Nathan Alexander captured the pole vault as he cleared a season-best 4.70m (15-05.00).

// ON THE ALL-TIME TOP 10 CHARTS
Two more marks recorded by the women also will go down as ranking among the best in program history. On the track, freshman Lattimore raced to a time of 24.25 in the 200m dash to post the seventh-fastest time in UC history. In the field, Kellsa Mbah posted a big personal-best as she bounced her way to 11.97m (39-03.25), the fourth-best mark in UC history.

// NOTING SOME OF THE PERSONAL BESTS
While the program recorded 47 personal-best marks on the day, four stood out in a big way. In the sprints, Slyvanna Ross was third overall in the 400m dash as she ran 57.49 to break the one minute barrier and run a personal best by nearly three seconds (2.99). In the 400m hurdles, Grace Winckowski also was third as she ran 1:05.29 to lower her personal best by 3.73 seconds. The 5,000m runs produced the final two big personal-best times with Tessa Ward running 17:45.09 to place sixth in the women’s race before Nick Grismer ran 14:54.23 to place fourth in the men’s race. For the Ward, that time lowers her best by over one minute (1:18.77) while Grismer lowered his best time by 22 seconds.

// IN THE BLOCKS
Two meets appear on the schedule for the Bearcats next week with Alex Bloom leading off as an entrant in the Bulldog Decathlon-Heptathlon event hosted by Georgia in Athens, Ga., April 5-6. Then, April 7-8, will see the remainder of the team take part in the Tiger Track Classic at Auburn.
