T&F: Bloom Smashes Career Best at Bulldog Decathlon
April 9, 2017

CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati track and field junior Alex Bloom finished strong in his first decathlon of the season as he tallied four more individual event personal-best marks on his way to a huge improvement overall as he scored 7,329 points to place fifth in the highly competitive Bulldog Decathlon in Athens, Ga., this weekend. Bloom, who improved his all-time best by 709 points, moved up six spots to No. 3 on the program’s all-time Top 10 ledger while becoming just the third UC man to scored 7,300 points or more.

Following the weekend, Bloom, who also his name to three more individual event Top 10 lists in the program’s decathlon record book, now ranks among some the best in the nation as his 7,329 points currently places him 12th nationally and first among competitors from the American Athletic Conference. That is now his second Top 25 ranking nationally after his clearance of 2.14m (7-00.75) in the decathlon high jump one day prior ranks him tied for 25th in the NCAA and second in the American.

To get to his final total, Bloom added personal bests in four of the five events held Sunday afternoon, giving him a personal best in nine of the 10 events in the decathlon. He opened with a time of 15.62 in the 110m high hurdles for 776 points and added his name to the decathlon hurdles record book as he tied Marc Mitalski (2002) for the seventh-fastest time in the event. From there, he picked up 558 points as he had a best of 34.74m (114-00) in the discus, the lone event he did not record a personal best. In the pole vault, Bloom cleared 4.57m (15-00.00) to collect 781 points and move into a tie for the No. 10 position on the UC decathlon chart with Jeremy Smith, who also cleared the same height in 1993.

The penultimate event of the decathlon, Bloom had a huge personal best as he sent the javelin out to 49.74m (163-02) to secure 585 more points. Entering the meet, Bloom’s best in the event was 41.54m, meaning he improved by 26’ 11’ (8.20m) with that one throw. He closed out the day running 4:44.85 for another 650 points in the 1,500m run. Heading into that race, he had already scored enough points to better his previous decathlon overall score of 6,620 points that he recorded across all 10 events last year.
