Sophomore high jumper Erika Hurd cleared a career-best height to win the high jump at the historic Drake Relays on Friday night to become University of Cincinnati’s seventh Drake Relays Champion in school history.

With just one other jumper remaining at 6’ 0.5”, Hurd made the most of her opportunity and cleared the staggering height on her first attempt. It took Dior Delophont from Kent State two jumps, which made UC’s sophomore the eventual Drake Relays Champion after each missed the following height. The clearance was the best of Hurd’s career, and it places her second in Cincinnati’s records book just a quarter of an inch behind Renee Hein (6’ 0.75”, 2007).

She is now the eighth Drake Relays Champion in UC history. The Bearcats' last event winner was Mackenzie Fields as she won the pole vault last season.

Senior Josh Dangel tied for seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 16’ 10.75”.

Two additional Bearcats will be competing at Drake Stadium tomorrow with Alyssa McBride in the high jump and Chase Beckmann in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The remainder of UC’s student-athletes will be competing at the RedHawk Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. The one-day meet begins at 10 a.m. with field events and running events start at noon.
