Cotten Leads Heptathlon After Day One Of BIG EAST Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - Jasmine Cotten leads the heptathlon and Kaitlyn Good sits fifth in striking distance after the opening day of competition at the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at USF Track & Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Cotten totaled 3,379 points through the first four events and holds a 199-point lead over Pittsburgh's Elizabeth Kline who is currently second (3,180). Good is fifth with 3,086 points, just 293 points off of Cotten's lead. Dominique Best sits in 11th place with a 2,748-point total.

Cotten, the 2011 BIG EAST Indoor Pentathlon Champion, tallied first-place honors in the 100 hurdles (13.95) and high jump (1.78m/5-10). She was fourth in the 200 meters (25.44) and fifth in the shot put (10.99m/36-00.75).

In the men's decathlon, Kyle Kubera is eighth (3,254) and Matt Bova is 10th (2,971) with both Bearcats chasing Connecticut's Jake Waruch who put up 3,937 points on the first day of competition.

In the 3,000 steeplechase, Chase Beckman came home 10th with a 9:14.36 clocking, ahead of teammate Tyler Ross, who clocked 9:46.03 to place 13th. On the women's side, Cortney Staruch finished 15th after crossing the line in 11:13.27.

Friday Akerstrom took ninth place in the women's hammer throw with her toss of 52.54m (172-04). Jessica Molyet came home in 20th place with her best effort of 43.54m (142-10). In the men's event, Jake Haseman came home fourth with a mark of 55.98m (183-08) and Josh Province placed 16th (44.56m/146-02).
