Somerville Cruises Past Competition to Set School Record
Somerville continued his impressive season, setting the UC record in the 110 hurdles with a 13.37.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Cincinnati hurdler Terrence Somerville set the school record Friday in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a 13.37 to defeat the second-place qualifier by .16 seconds.

Somerville moves on to the quarterfinals Saturday at 7:20 p.m. Twenty-three other student-athletes will join Somerville in Saturday’s quarterfinals, with the top three from each heat, plus the next three best times, advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. June 5-8.

Dailyn Moore also competed in the 110 hurdles Friday evening. Moore finished the race in 14.30 seconds but did not make the cut for the quarterfinals.

On the women’s side, Erika Hurd narrowly missed her personal best (1.78 meters, 5’10”) in the high jump, clearing 1.77 meters (5’9.75”). After taking two attempts to clear the bar at 1.67 meters, Hurd cleared 1.72 meters on her first attempt. She went on to clear 1.77 meters on her second attempt, but was unable to jump over the 1.81-meter bar. Hurd, a freshman, finished 19th in Friday’s East Preliminary.

Mackenzie Fields and Alyssa McBride finished in 14th and 17th place in the pole vault, respectively. Fields passed the 3.70 meter (12’1.50”) bar setting and cleared the bar at 3.85 meters (12’7.50’). McBride cleared the 3.70-meter bar on her first attempt and then cleared 3.85 meters on her second attempt. With the bar set at 4.00 meters (13’1.50”), both Fields and McBride were unable to clear the bar.



Fields finishes her storied career at UC having set the school record, Gettler Stadium record and Jesse Owens Classic meet record in the outdoor pole vault, while capturing both the 2013 BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field titles. She was also named the conference women’s field athlete of the week four times this season and picked up All-American honors during the indoor season.

Competition is not over for the Bearcats. Frida Akerstrom (shot put), Emelie Larsson (javelin) and Michael Nwanko (triple jump) begin their championship run Saturday.
