Catherine Leads Bearcats on Day 1 at NCAA East Preliminary
May 25, 2017

LEXINGTON, KY - The first day of action at the 2017 NCAA East Preliminary Round meet came to a close Thursday night with the University of Cincinnati track and field team unable to advance any of its competitors to the next round of action. The day, which began with constant rain showers that pushed several event start times back, saw the Bearcats send six individuals to compete with four in the field and two on the track.

Brooke Catherine posted the best finish of the day for UC as she placed tied for 18th in the pole vault after clearing 3.95m (12-11.50). Catherine, who entered the meet ranked tied for 36th in the East, cleared the first two bars of the day on her first attempt before bowing out of the competition with three misses at 4.10m, which would have been a career-best mark.

Staying in the field, Annette Echikunwoke was unable to make a return trip to Eugene in the hammer as she placed 29th overall with a best of 54.82m (179-10). In the long jump, Austin Edwards placed 42nd in the men’s competition with the rookie jumping a best of 6.86m (22-06.25) while Kellsa Mbah placed 46th in the women’s event with a best of 5.62m (18-05.25).

On the track, both Bryana Robinson and Tiona Lattimore ran in the 400m dash with both placing outside the Top 24 to miss moving on to the quarterfinals set for Friday. Robinson finished 29th overall in 54.28 while Lattimore, who entered the meet tied for 47th, placed 36th overall in 54.70.

Four Bearcats will be in action Friday with three competing in field events that are set to start at 4:30 p.m. and one other set to race at 9:00 p.m. For the women, Loretta Blaut is set to compete in the high jump as she looks to return to the national meet for the second year in a row. On the men’s side, Adrian Valles will try for his sixth-consecutive NCAA appearance and third in a row outdoors as he takes part in the pole vault while Macklin Tudor will look to earn his first appearance in the national meet as he takes part in the shot put. Dan Huben will be the lone runner to see action Friday as he will run in the 3,000m steeplechase. All four will need to finish in the Top 12 of their respective events to earn berths into the national finals in Eugene, Ore. (June 7-10).
