CINCINNATI - Terrence Somerville (Akron, Ohio/Buchtel) ran a 13.58 and placed 19th in the preliminary round of the 110-meter hurdles Saturday at the 2013 U.S. Championships, hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 2013 BIG EAST outdoor champion missed qualifying for the semifinals by three spots, as the top 16 finishers advanced.
Though Somerville did not advance for the opportunity to compete in the World Championships, which will be held August 10-18 in Moscow, Russia, he leaves an indelible mark on the Bearcats' track and field program.
This outdoor season, Somerville was named U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year. He also set the school record at the BIG EAST Championships with a time of 13.41 and followed this performance by breaking his own record, speeding to a 13.37 finish in the NCAA East Preliminary.
Somerville finished ninth in the 110 hurdles race and earned Second Team All-American honors at the NCAA Championship. He was also named UC's 2013 Men's Track Athlete of the Year and garnered the programs top honor, the Gettler spirit of Track and Field Award.
The Outdoor Championships run through Sunday, June 23.
