Women's indoor track & field heads to NYC for Armory Collegiate Inv.|
Jan. 31, 2013
The University of Cincinnati women's indoor track & field team faces its stiffest competition of the season this weekend when it participates in the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City. The Bearcats will be one of more than 100 teams taking part in the meet, including 13 of the top 25-ranked teams in the current U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) ranking.
UC comes into the meet on the heels of three weeks of impressive performances in meets at Kent State University, Indiana University and the University of Kentucky. While those meets all had very competitive fields, none stacked up quite as stout as this weekend's lineup. Of the 13 national ranked teams, there are eight of the top 10 including Nos. 1 through 7. The Bearcats will also see six other BIG EAST Conference teams in this meet, the most they'd faced so far this season.
Due to the sheer size of the Armory Collegiate Invitational, there are multiple sections to the events. The championship sections include the top performance standards for the events and the college section is akin to the opens in other meets. There are also regional sections In some events. Pole vaulter Mackenzie Fields, whose 13' 9.25" mark at last week's meet ranks her seventh in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I performance list, will be in the championship section on Friday evening. For the complete listing of UC participants, see the schedule and entries list below.
The Armory, formally known as the Fort Washington Avenue Armory, is located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, on the northern tip of the island. It is a mile to the northwest of Yankee Stadium - which sits just across the Harlem River in the Bronx - and northeast of Columbia University. Built in 1911, the Armory is one of the best known indoor track facilities in the world and is home to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. It has a 200-meter, six-lane Mondo banked track, two jumps sand pits, pole vault pit and throws cage. It hosted last season BIG EAST indoor track championships.
The two-day competition opens Friday morning. For event-by-event Twitter updates on UC results, follow @UCDougMosley.
