American Athletic Conference Release (link)
CINCINNATI - For the second week in a row and the third time this season, University of Cincinnati track and field student-athlete Annette Echikunwoke has been named the American Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday (January 31). The junior, who won the weight throw at the Thundering Herd Invitational over the weekend at Marshall, also was selected for the honor in Week 1 (December 13) before being tabbed for the accolade last week as well.
Echikunwoke, the national co-leader in the weight throw at 22.53m (73-11.00), recently won the event in West Virginia with a toss of 22.10m (72-06.25), defeating her closest competitor by nearly 6’ (5’ 8.25”). The weight throw featured four women that entered holding marks that ranked in the Top 12 nationally, including the other co-national leader, whom finished second to Echikunwoke.
With her toss of 22.10m at Marshall, Echikunwoke now has recorded two tosses of over 22 meters this season. Looking back at the 2016 season, there was only one 22 meter mark or better recorded and that toss measured 22.14m.
UC will travel to College Station, Texas - the site of the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships - to take part in the Charlie Thomas Invitational this Friday and Saturday (February 3-4) on the Texas A&M campus. The scored team meet will feature competitors from TAMU, Baylor, UC, Clemson, Houston, Rice, South Plains, TCU and UCLA.
