Bearcats come through at Hoosier Hills|
Feb. 9, 2013
The UC indoor track & field teams posted solid results after a day of competition at Indiana University's Hoosier Hills Invitational on Friday. The meet concludes Saturday morning at Indiana's Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Michael Nwankwo claimed an event win for the men's team, taking the triple jump with a 48' 7.75' leap. The men also had impressive results in the 800 meters and 3,000 meters. In the 800, Ryan Wynn finished second (1:54.88) and Cameron Rohmann sixth (1:58.14). In the 3,000, Jeffrey Griffiths was second (8:30.31) and Colin Cotton fifth (8:36.25).
Chase Beckmann had an interesting double. Within an hour's time, he got two top 10 finishes in the mile and 800 meters.
In other results for the men's team, Marquis Brookins advanced to Saturday's final in the 60 meters, Tony Williamson won the second heat of 600 meters and Bryan Maldinger finished third in the 400 meters in 50.60.
Although the men's team won't formally field an indoor squad until next season, the outdoor team is permitted to compete in three indoor meets. The Hoosier Hills is the second of the three and the results on Friday were in line with the expectations head coach Bill Schnier laid out before the meet.
The UC women compete in the BIG EAST championship next weekend, so much of the team did not take part in the Hoosier Hills. Head coach Susan Seaton was seeking opportunities for those she did bring to notch BIG EAST qualifying times. Cameron Gardner is one who is glad to have made the trip after she earned a spot in the BIG EAST meet in the 60 meters, clocking 7.72 in Friday's preliminaries. She'll be joined by teammates Morgan Gordon and Shanice Smith in Saturday's final. Gardner also won a heat in the 200 meters and placed fifth overall but missed BIG EAST qualifying for that event by .21.
Je'Rica Sanders took .14 off her season-best time in 60-meters hurdles, lowering her time from 8.86 to 7.72 and is now in BIG EAST top 10. Sanders advanced to Saturday's final with fifth-fastest time in prelims.
Competition begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. For UC's event-by-event results on Twitter, follow @UCDougMosley.
