Bearcats ready for BIG EAST women's indoor track & field championship|
Feb. 15, 2013
Saturday will be the opening day of competition for the University of Cincinnati women's indoor track & field team at the BIG EAST Conference championship, being held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva. The meet will conclude on Sunday.
The Bearcats have had better-than-expected results during the regular season and head into the conference meet with high hopes. But just equaling last season's performance will be incredible. UC finished an all-time best second in the BIG EAST championship and swept the individual awards for outstanding track performer (Kathy Klump) and outstanding field performer (Jasmine Cotten).
Klump and Cotten may be gone - they were both seniors last season - but UC comes into this year's championship meet with probably its deepest squad to date. The Bearcats have a dozen or more who could potentially earn all-conference honors this weekend and are especially stacked in the pair of events: the pole vault and pentathlon.
The Bearcats have four qualifiers in the pole vault, led by No. 1 ranked Mackenzie Fields at 13' 9.25". Fields top mark is nearly eight inches higher than the next best in the conference. The other Bearcats in the pole vault are sixth-ranked Emily Clay and Chelsea Vaughan (each at 12' 1.5") and 18th ranked Alyssa McBride (11' 7.75").
UC also has the top-ranked performer in the pentathlon. Kaitlyn Good scored 3,907 points in the multi-event back in December in the very same facility where she'll be competing this weekend. Her mark is 166 points better than the next best and 252 ahead of third place. Also competing in the pentathlon is Taylor Rosenhagen who is ranked 10th.
Beyond the pole vault and pentathlon, the Bearcats have others who are poised for big results this weekend. Erika Hurd is ranked fourth in the high jump (5' 10"), Frida Akerstrom is fifth in the shot put (49' 5.75"), Monica Phillips is eighth in the weight throw, Kenya Woodall is ninth in the 400 meters (55.82), and Je'Rica Sanders and Danheisha Harding are ninth and tenth respectively in the 60 meters hurdles (8.72 and 8.74).
Saturday's events include Good and Rosenhagen in the pentathlon and preliminaries in most of the track events. Shanay Portis has a busy day with prelims in the 60 and 200 meters and the long jump final.
All competition from the BIG EAST indoor track & field championship will be livestreamed at BigEastTrack.com. Event-by-event results for UC via Twitter are available by following @UCDougMosley.
