PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For their performances at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational and the Alabama Relays, junior Antione Drakeford (Columbus, Ohio/Africentric) was named BIG EAST Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week, while junior Jasmine Cotton (Fayetteville, W. Va./Fayetteville) earned BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Cotten led three UC heptathletes with a second-place finish in the heptathlon at the Alabama Relays with a NCAA Provisional mark of 5,321. On Day 1 of competition, Cotten finished first among all competitors in the high jump, clearing a regional qualifying height of 5' 8-3/4", leading her to a first-day score of 3,323. On Day 2, Cotten took first-place honors in the long jump with a regional qualifying mark of 19' 8", before hurling the javelin 87' 7", and running 2:26.80 in the 800, earning her second among all competitors.
In the 400 meters at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, Drakeford broke the Gettler Stadium record and the UC records, and set a regional qualifying time of 45.83. Drakeford's 400 time is the top mark in the BIG EAST this season. In addition to his individual triumph in the 400, Drakeford helped UC win the 4x100 and take second in the 4x400. The Columbus, Ohio, native clocked a 45.1 split in the 4x400.
The Bearcats host their final home meet of the season on Saturday, April 4, when UC welcomes teams to Gettler Stadium for the Southern Ohio Cup.
