The University of Cincinnati track & field program will host 18 other schools on Friday and Saturday at Gettler Stadium for the 2014 All-Ohio Championships. The men’s program searches for its first All-Ohio Championship since 2010, while the women last won in 2012.
The Bearcats return home after competing at the USF Collegiate Invitational last Friday. The squad garnered 15 top-two finishes in Tampa, Fla. and look to build off that success this weekend to bring home a pair of team titles.
The reigning women’s champion is Ohio State, who will be competing this weekend. On the men’s side Kent State is the defending champion, but they will not be running at Gettler Stadium this weekend.
UC returns four individual champions from last year’s All-Ohio Championships in Darnell Gilbert (200m), Kevin Fink (5,000m), Josh Dangel (pole vault) and Michael Nwankwo (triple jump). All four student-athletes will have a chance to retain their individual title this weekend.
Headed into this weekend, Cincinnati has eight student-athletes ranked top 30 in the NCAA East Regional with each team having four. Alyssa McBride (11th, pole vault) is the top ranked UC athlete on the women’s side with Kenya Woodall (15th, 400m), Erika Hurd (28th, high jump) and Mary Bridges (28th, discus) also in the mix. On the men’s side, Dangel sits fourth in the pole vault with Macklin Tudor ranked 10th in the discus. Gilbert (22nd, 400m) and Bryan Cain (23rd, 110m hurdles) are the others ranked top 30.
The All-Ohio Championships kicks off on Friday at noon with the decathlon. Friday will also include a few field events and distance races.
