The UC men's and women's outdoor track & field teams have high expectations for this week's BIG EAST Conference championship meets. Those hopes are pinned on some outstanding qualifying marks that the Bearcats have posted heading into the meet. The men's team has 37 qualifyiers for the event and the women's team has 36.

The UC women's team boasts three No. 1 ranks - Mackenzie Fields in the pole vault, Emelie Larsson in the javelin throw and the 4x100-meters relay team of Morgan Gordon, Shanay Portis, Cameron Gardner and Shanice Smith. Fields has the fourth-best mark in the nation this season in the pole vault - 14' 3.25" - which also ranks 19th in the world. She just won the pole vault title at the Drake Relays last week and previously set the meet record at Ohio State University's Jesse Owens Classic. Four times this season she had been named a BIG EAST performer of the week. Teammates Alyssa McBride is ranked second, Emily Clay sixth and Chelsea Vaughan 11th in the pole vault, giving the Bearcats four entries in the event.

Larsson has returned to competition in recent weeks in top form, unleashing a 161' 3" throw last week at Miami University's RedHawk Invitational that vaulted her to the top of the BIG EAST rankings. The throw is also the 17th-best in the nation this season. The throws will be a strong point for the Bearcats in the meet. UC has qualified three in the discus throw (topped by Mary Bridges at No. 2 with a 170' 2" toss), four in the hammer throw and two in the shot put.

On the men's side, UC has 15 marks that are ranked in the top eight in the conference, highlighted by the No. 1 standing in the 110-meters hurdles held by Terrence Somerville. Somerville's time of 13.48 is the fourth-best performance in the nation this season and 11th best in the world. The Bearcats expect to be especially strong in the 110-meters hurldes since behind Somerville they also have the No. 4 (Dailyn Moore) and No. 7 (Bryan Cain) hurdlers.

Josh Dangel also holds a No. 1 BIG EAST ranking in the pole vault at 17' 6.25". UC has qualified the maximum five entrants for the event with Tommy Marks, Colt Robinson, Dillon Risser and Kyle Kubera also attaining the qualifying mark. The Bearcats would even have a sixth qualifier in Nathan Alexander if not for the cap of five.

The BIG EAST championship meets will be held at Rutgers University's Bauer Track and Field Complex in Piscataway, N.J. The meet begins on Friday with the first day of the multi events (women's heptathlon and men's decathlon) and the men's and women's hammer throw. The event runs through Sunday.
