New Technique Propels Akerstrom to New Personal Record

June 19, 2014

University of Cincinnati thrower Frida Akerstrom recorded a new personal-best mark in the shot put this past weekend at the Ashland Summer Series #3.

Akerstrom, who recently switched from the glide technique to a spin technique, hurled a new career-best toss of 54’ 10.25” to win the Ashland Summer Series #3. The toss easily surpassed her previous-best mark of 52’ 2.75”, which serves as the UC school record. Unfortunately, her new mark, which was achieved in just her sixth meet using the spin technique, would have gone down as the new school record if she wouldn’t have redshirted the 2013-14 season.

She currently ranks first on the Swedish performance list and 31st in all of Europe. She will defend her 2013 shot put title at the Swedish National Championships on August 3. She has also qualified to the European Championships, which are August 12-17, but she is unsure if Sweden will invite her to the continental competition.

The Swedish native’s toss would have been the 17th best toss in the NCAA and finished 10th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which were contested this past week. Akerstrom will return next season for her redshirt senior season with her sights set on making it to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
