University of Cincinnati student-athlete Frida Akerstrom (Nynashamn, Sweden/Nynashamn Gymnasium), competing for her native Sweden, threw 14.78m (48-06) in the shot put Wednesday inside Central Stadium at the 27th World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
Akerstrom placed sixth in qualifying group A with her best effort of 14.78m, just missing the fifth and final qualifying spot. Russia's Olesya Svirdova threw 14.95m (49-00.25) on her final throw to out-distance Akerstrom for fifth.
Akerstrom improved on each throw, opening up with a toss of 14.30m (46-11), followed by an effort of 14.64m (48-00.5) ahead of her best toss of the day on her final throw, 14.78m.
The rising senior holds a career-best mark of 15.55m (51-00.25), thrown at the 2012 Big East Conference Outdoor Championship. Her 2013 season-best toss of 15.13m (49-07.75) came via a second-place finish at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championship. She took sixth place in the shot put at the Big East outdoor meet and qualified for the NCAA Championship preliminary round.
