CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics named Mackenzie Fields (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) and David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) the 2013 UC Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively. The award is voted on by Bearcats coaches.
Fields, a member of the women's track and field team, was recently selected as UC's Helen Norman Smith awardee, which goes to the top senior female student-athlete who has distinguished herself by academic achievement, athletic accomplishment and service to the campus community.
Fields had a storied senior season with the Bearcats. Selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, she holds UC's Gettler Stadium and school records in the outdoor pole vault. She swept the BIG EAST Conference Indoor and Outdoor pole vault titles and captured the Jesse Owens Classic meet record with a personal best jump of 14'3.25".
After finishing 10th at the NCAA Indoor Championships to pick up All-America honors, Fields followed with a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary. She was named the 2012-13 BIG EAST American Eagle Outfitters Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for UC.
Tepe won the 2012 BIG EAST Golf Championship, shooting a career-best 8-under par with a 76.0 stroke average. The senior earned All-BIG EAST Conference honors after claiming medalist honors in a wire-to-wire victory at the conference championship. He competed at the 2013 NCAA tournament, becoming just the fourth UC student-athlete in school history to accomplish this feat.
He posted two top-20 finishes, including a tie for 12th place at the Marshall Invitational with an even-par (70-75-68 = 213). Tepe also notched three top-30 finishes this season, giving him 21 for his career.
Tepe qualified for the U.S. Public Links Championship, finishing first among 48 participants after carding a 4-under par 136 (67-69) in a qualifier at Sharon Woods Golf Course in Cincinnati.
