Track & Field Mourns Loss Of Former Student-Athlete TJ Doherty|
July 25, 2012
Former University of Cincinnati track and field student-athlete TJ Doherty died Monday in Boulder, Colo. from injuries he sustained when he was hit by a car while bicycling.
The 32-year old Doherty, a Cincinnati native from Elder HS, graduated from UC in 2002 with a degree in spanish.
Doherty ranks ninth on the all-time UC list in the 1500 meters, a race which netted him second place at the 2002 Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. At that meet, the UC men's team earned a second-place finish, only nine points behind TCU who was second in the NCAA the year before.
Maggie McKinley, UC's Senior Associate AD/Compliance and a former UC track and field student-athlete and teammate of Doherty remembers his zest for life.
"TJ was a great teammate and an all-around good guy," McKinley said. "He taught everyone he ever met to live life to the fullest. He will be missed."
Following graduation from UC, Doherty lived abroad in Spain while working on and later earning a master's degree in Spanish from Bowling Green State University.
"TJ was a very talented runner," UC head men's track and field coach Bill Schnier said. "He had an easy-going and enjoyable personality, which was well-suited for Spain, a country he loved. In recent years, he lived in Boulder, Colorado, working, running and riding bicycles. He was engaged, planning marriage in the near future. He had a huge circle of friends and enjoyed life to the fullest."
On Wednesday in Colorado, friends in the Boulder running community will honor Doherty again at a tribute run. The run, which is open to the public, will start from the Boulder Running Co. (2775 Pearl St.) at 6 p.m. MT and will include three- to six-mile routes at a variety of paces, organizers said. Runners are encouraged to show up early to register and call 303-786-9255 with any questions.
Doherty was engaged to Adrienne Herzog.
