SOLLENTUNA, Sweden - Two University of Cincinnati track and field student-athletes competed at the Swedish Junior National Championship, Aug. 10-12. Emelie Larsson won the javelin and Frida Akerstrom was first in the shot put.
Larsson (Hisings Backa, Sweden/Polhemsgymnasict) won the javelin competition on her fourth throw (164'9"). The sophomore earned USTFCCCA Honorable Mention All-America accolades and finished 17th after throwing 147'7" in 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Larsson set a UC record last season with a javelin throw of 166'2" and established herself among the Top-15 throwers in the country. Following the regular season, she earned UC Track and Field's Best Freshman honor.
Rising junior Akerstrom (Nynashamn, Sweden/Nynashamn Gymnasium) won the shot put with a throw of 47'5", outdistancing her closest competitor by over a foot. She also finished in third place in the discus with a best throw of 145'1". She finished behind Julia Wiberg (166'6") and Sandra Andersson (151'2"). In 2012, Akerstrom took third in shot put at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and placed 35th with a top mark of 47'5" in the NCAA Outdoor preliminary round.
