The University of Cincinnati can now claim they have produced a Swedish National Champion as senior Frida Akerstrom claimed gold in the shot put at the Swedish National Championships.
Akerstrom, who is from Nynashamn, Sweden, hurled a personal-best toss of 15.92m (52-2¾) on her sixth and final throw. Prior to her last toss, the senior thrower was sitting in third place. The winning throw surpassed her previous best of 15.55m (51-0¼), which she marked at the 2012 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
Akerstrom’s winning throw also eclipsed the Bearcats’ school record of 15.70m (51-6½) held by Jo Young, but since she was not competing in an NCAA sanctioned meet, her throw will not be placed in the UC record books.
The senior shot putter has one final year of eligibility at Cincinnati, where she hopes to officially break the school record come track season. Akerstrom is enrolled at the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences and is an Environmental Science major.
