CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati track and field team held its annual Red & Black intrasquad indoor scrimmage Friday evening at Armory Fieldhouse, with the Red team prevailing over the Black squad 138-132.
In the men's division, senior thrower Chris Littleton (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) headlined the meet after he won the discus competition with an intrasquad-meet-record mark of 163 feet, 4 inches, which surpassed Troy Cooper’s year-old mark. Littleton also won the shot put event with a mark of 53-11.25.
Junior Tim Vala (Highland Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) made a weight throw of 52-8.75, which would rank him 10th on the all-time UC list had it been an NCAA event. Vala also placed third in the discus with a distance of 139-10.
In addition to Littleton, a pair of male Bearcats recorded wins in two events. Freshman Tariq Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lockland) earned victories in the long jump and triple jump. Senior Mario Cannon (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Lutheran East) was the winner in the 55-meter hurdles and the 55-meter dash.
In the women's division, four Red & Black intrasquad meet records were set.
Junior Danheisha Harding (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne/Eastern Kentucky) ran the 55-meter hurdles in 7.7 seconds, breaking senior Jasmine Cotten's (Fayetteville, W. Va./Fayetteville) mark of 7.8 recorded in 2009.
After seeing one of her intrasquad meet records fall, Cotten set a meet record in the high jump after clearing a height of 5-10.5.
In the 800m run, senior All-American Kathy Klump (Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) recorded a personal-best time of 2:16.4, which surpassed her meet record time of 2:17.3, set last season.
The Black 4x400-meter relay 'A' team of junior Shanay Portis (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield), freshman Jalisa Jarrett (Pickerington, Ohio/Central), sophomore Kaitlyn Good (Vandalia, Ohio/Vandalia) and Klump finished in 3:56.4, which broke the previous meet record set in 2008.
The UC women's track and field team opens its 2011-12 indoor season Friday when it competes in the Eastern Illinois University Early Bird meet in Charleston, Ill.
