The University of Cincinnati cross country teams opened up the 2013 season Friday afternoon as they competed at the 32nd Annual Queen City Invitational in Mason, Ohio. The men’s team took fourth in the meet, while the women claimed fifth.

On the men’s side, senior Evan Baum led the way as he ran a personal-best 5K time of 15:10.39 and finished fifth. Joining Baum in the Top 10 was redshirt senior Oliver Book, who took seventh at 15:13.10. Book returns to the Bearcats lineup after sitting out last fall due to an injury.

Rounding out UC’s top five runners were senior Eric Hauser (15th), junior Greg Sanders (24th) and freshman Anthony Car (39th).

On the women’s side, junior Ashley Earman paced Cincinnati with a personal-best time of 18:20.12, which garnered her ninth place.

A trio of UC sophomores were the next to cross the finish line as Alex Mahle (30th), Maggie Bischoff (38th) and Annette Brickman (41st) all finished within the Top 50 runners. Bischoff’s time of 19:52.76 was a personal best by nearly two minutes.

The Bearcats return to action next weekend in Lexington, Ky. As they run at the Bluegrass Cross Country Invitational. The men will be bumping up in distance as they will run an 8K course, while the women will remain at the 5K distance for another week.
