BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati cross country teams closed out their 2005 season this Saturday at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships in Bloomington, Ind. The men earned a 19th-place team finish, while the women took 23rd.

The men's squad was unable to carry its surprise success from BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 28 to national competition. Although they finished among the top 20, they were unable to pull more upsets in the tough field of 30 schools. Topping the Bearcats by just one point to take 18th place was local rival Xavier.

Junior Kevin Schwarz led Cincinnati for the second consecutive meet finishing 75th overall in a time of 33:20. Junior David Adams jumped to the front of the Bearcat pack, taking 103rd place in 34:18. The freshman combo of Randy and Rick King finished third and fourth on the team, placing 105th and 130th, respectively. Junior Eric Mayhaus rounded out the scoring in 147th.

Ohio State's Brian Olinger became the individual champion in a time of 30:51, but conference rival, Wisconsin, took home the team title. Notre Dame will join Wisconsin as the region's two teams that automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 21.

The Bearcat women also faced a difficult task at the regional championships, going up against several nationally-ranked squads, including conference foe Notre Dame. Cincinnati's 23rd-place finish with 522 points, put them just four points behind Bowling Green.

Senior Karen Berling again led the Bearcats, finishing 71st overall and in a time of 23:02. Junior Cristy Doll was close behind in 23:07 for a 79th-place finish. Freshman Megan Knapp (23:13), sophomore Nichole Leslie (23:32), and freshman Kris Schuerle (25:30) completed the team scoring.

Butler's Victoria Mitchell earned the individual victory in the 6K race with a time of 20:37. Michigan took the team title and will compete at the NCAA Championships with Notre Dame as the region's two automatic qualifiers.
