CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men’s and women’s cross country teams were honored with 2010 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, a squad must have had a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or better and started at least five student-athletes at their respective NCAA regional championship.
The Cincinnati men’s team was one of 152 teams to receive the honor after earning a cumulative GPA of 3.40 and having seven harriers compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 13, 2010 in Rochester, Mich.: seniors David Barry (Vandalia,Ohio/Butler) and Tommy Morgan (Maineville, Ohio/Kings); junior Eric Finan (New Richmond, Ohio/New Richmond); sophomores Chase Beckmann (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) and Oliver Book (Borden, Ind./Providence); and freshmen Evan Baum (Shaker Heights, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Eric Hauser (Mason, Ohio/William Mason).
It’s the second academic tribute this week for Finan, who was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Honoree on Monday, Feb. 14.
The UC women’s cross country team was one of 192 squads to win the distinction after scoring a 3.08 GPA and boasting seven runners who raced at the Great Lakes Regional: seniors Lilian Jelimo (Kapsabet, Kenya/Kapsabet Girls), Katie Lewnard (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy), Michelle McKenney (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) and Emily Thompson (North Bend, Ohio/Taylor); juniors Jill Glassmeyer (Cincinnati,Ohio/McAuley) and Alison Zukowski (Mentor, Ohio/St. Mark's); and sophomore Cortney Staruch (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland).
The Villanova University women’s cross country team won the USTFCCCA Academic Team of Year Award for the second straight year, while Florida State University took home the honor in the men’s division.
