Glenn Sample

  • Multi-sport standout who was a fixture at third base for almost his entire UC career.
  • Earned All-Mid-American Conference and All-Ohio honors as a linebacker in football.
  • Turned down professional opportunities in both football and baseball to fulfill service commitment.
  • Returned to UC in 1956 as an assistant football coach, embarking on a career in which he served, sometimes concurrently, as head wrestling coach, intramural director and assistant athletics director.
  • Began a 21-season career as head baseball coach in 1961, directing his very first team to the NCAA district tournament.
  • His teams won three Missouri Valley Conference titles and made four NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • His jersey number, 1, was retired.
  • UC Athletic Hall of Fame 1982.
