Tony  Yates



  • Three-year starter at point guard was called "my coach on the floor" by then-head coach Ed Jucker for his leadership.
  • Directed UC to an 82-7 record, NCAA national titles in 1961 and 1962 and a near miss of a third straight crown in 1963.
  • Three-year winner of the team's Best Defensive Player award for his efforts in helping UC finish 15th in 1961, fourth in 1962 and first in 1963 in the NCAA national defensive rankings.
  • Team captain as a senior.
  • First team All-Missouri Valley Conference choice in 1963.
  • Earned second team (Helms) and honorable mention (UPI) All-American recognition in 1962.
  • Was a first team All-American (Helms Foundation), earning third team honors (AP, NABC) and honorable mention laurels (UPI, Sporting News) in 1963.
  • Returned to UC to launch his coach career as an assistant coach 1972-74.
  • Served as UC head basketball coach for six seasons (1984-89), compiling a 70-100 record.
  • UC Athletics Hall of Fame 1985.
