WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at WF Baseball Park.
Wake Forest's Tim Cooney threw seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out 10 for the win.
The Demon Deacons scored four runs in the bottom of the second to seize control. After back-to-back singles to open the frame, James Harris drew a walk to load the bases and Brett Armour doubled down the left field line to score Carlos Lopez and Charlie Morgan. Kevin Jordan followed with an infield single to score Harris from third and push the lead to 3-0. After a pop out, Pat Blair singled through the left side to bring home Armour.
Bearcats starter Matt Ring was chased after 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits.
Thomas Gentile relieved and cruised through 4-1/3 innings, allowing just one baserunner until running into trouble in the seventh. Evan Stephens and Blair singled to open the inning before a walk to Conor Keniry loaded the bases, prompting a change. Jason Pascuzzi entered and got two outs before allowing a two-out 2-RBI double by Charlie Morgan, which pushed the lead to 6-0.
The runs were charged to Gentile, who finished with 4-1/3 innings, two runs, and nine strikeouts.
Blair's fourth hit of the night, an RBI infield single, scored Armour in the eighth for Wake's final run.
